Football coach gets contract extended

The University of New Mexico and head football coach Bob Davie have agreed to a two-year contract extension. The new seven-year agreement will run through the 2019 season.
The financial terms from Davie's original contract remain unchanged.
"We are excited about the direction of the Lobo football program on and off the field under coach Davie," UNM Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs said. "We are committed in building a program that will bring out pride in our fans. We believe, more strongly than ever, that coach Davie is the right man to guide our program toward that end, and the extension will help preserve the future growth of the program."
Davie led the Lobos to a 4-9 record during his first year in 2012, producing more victories than the 2009-11 seasons combined. The Lobos were the most improved team in the nation in scoring margin in 2012, posting an average improvement of over 25 points per game.
The Lobos also finished among the top three most improved teams in the country in rushing offense, time of possession and turnover margin. UNM averaged 301.3 rushing yards per game to rank fifth in the country and set a school record with 10 300-yard rushing games last season.
In the classroom, the football team's 2012 fall grade-point average of 2.62 was its highest fall average since 2008. Fourteen Lobo football players earned Academic All-Mountain West honors in 2012, which was the school's second highest total since the conference's inception in 1999.
"Since I have been at the University of New Mexico, Paul Krebs and our administration have provided us with great support," Davie said. "I would also like to thank President Robert Frank and our Board of Regents. I appreciate the confidence they have shown in our coaching staff and the direction we are headed with this extension. We are all committed and excited about the future of Lobo football."
