COMMENTS FROM UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO HEAD COACH ROCKY LONG
(overall and on number of junior college players signed) -- "We thought we might only sign eight junior college players, but we were able to attract more good players than we originally anticipated, so we went ahead and signed a few more. We anticipate the (seven) junior college players who are already here will have a big impact on next year's team as will the others that come in the summer and fall. We hope we can redshirt all the freshmen."
(on specific needs) -- "We needed some receivers and a couple of running backs and we took care of that. We actually took one more quarterback than originally planned, but they're both good athletes. Currently, our depth on the offensive line has diminshed dramatically for a variety of reasons, so we had to go out and get some offensive linemen. We think we got some good ones that can play for us. There's always a need for safeties and defensive backs as well."
(on signing no linebackers) -- "We have several veterans coming back and a lot of the young guys that didn't play last year have shown good potential. That's why we moved (former defensive lineman) Michael Tuohy to linebacker because we signed a couple of junior college defensive linemen we hope will step right in. The depth at linebacker is real good even though it's young."
(on signing four from the state of New Mexico) -- "We thought they could all play. There were five high school players in the state that we wanted, and we were able to sign four, so we were very fortunate. We're always going to put our greatest recruiting effort into evaluating the talent in our state and trying to recruit everybody we think can play at our level."
(on possibly having 20 student-athletes from the state of New Mexico on scholarship when the 2005 fall semester begins, including 14 from Albuquerque) -- "That shows we believe in recruiting the players in our state and city. We've been lucky to have some players we didn't recruit come in as walk-ons and develop into real good players. To have a fourth of your scholarship players come from a state with the limited population of New Mexico says a tremendous amount about the program as a whole."
